Bianca gets Lion share in Ojukwu's will


The will of the late Ikemba Nnewi, Chief Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, was on Friday presented to the family with his widow, Bianca, getting the lion’s share.

The presentation by the Chief Registrar of the Enugu High Court, Mr Dennis Ekoh, was witnessed by Bianca, Mr Val Nwosu, Ojukwu’s first cousin, and Mr Mike Ejemba.

Okorocha Announces 50% Fee Reduction for Non-Indigenes in Imo Tertiary Institutions

Imo state Governor, Rochas Okorocha has extended his free education programme to students from other states studying in the state owned tertiary institutions as government assumes the responsibility paying 50 percent of their tuition fees.
 

The governor disclosed this  when the leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and Student Union Governments of  all tertiary institutions in Imo state paid him a solidarity visit in government house, Owerri.
 

A statement signed by the Governor's Special Assistant on Media, Ebere Uzoukwa explained that the gesture is for non-indigenous students in Imo State University, Imo State Polytechnic and College of Health Sciences Amaigbo.
 

Governor Okorocha who reiterated the commitment of his administration in making education free at all level in the state, however urged his counterparts in other states to adopt similar measure towards creating opportunities for Nigerian students in other tertiary institutions to enjoy free education.
 

He promised to sustain the  programme which he said to be topmost in the priority of his administration, warning that days of corruption and massive accumulation of wealth by public officers are gone for better things like free education at all level to happened in the state.

Fashola arrests policeman riding Okada on Highway




Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, South West, Nigeria on Thursday ordered the arrest of a policeman riding a motorcycle on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the governor spotted the policeman when his convoy was passing on the Ikeja section of the expressway.

Policemen in the governor`s convoy effected the arrest and immediately took him away in their van.

Fashola later told newsmen that the arrest was to serve as a deterrent to those who felt that they were above the law and so could break the state`s laws.

He added that the arrested policeman would be handed over to the state`s Commissioner of Police for prosecution.

It will be recalled that the state Traffic Law made on August 2nd prohibits the operations of motorcycles and tricycles on the Lagos-Abeokuta Express road and 474 other roads in Lagos. 

Buhari's First Daughter is Dead


The first daughter of Nigeria's former Head of State General Muhammadu Buhari died yesterday in Kaduna, two days after giving birth to a baby girl through a caesarean section at a private hospital.

Daily Trust Newspaper reports that, Zulaihatu Buhari, named after the General’s late mother and famously called Magajiya, was born December 5, 1972 and had battle with sickle cell anaemia.

She left behind her husband retired military Captain Mahmud Junaid and three kids (two girls and one boy), including her new baby. Until her death she was a staff of National Steel Raw Material Exploration Agency.
Her funeral prayers will hold today in Kaduna, according to family sources.

May her soul rest in Peace.

Nigerian Basketballer Shot Dead In USA


Reports say former Nigerian basketball player Chinedu Onyeuku has been shot dead after ‘trying to rob a home in Texas with an accomplice’.
It was gathered that the former D’Tigers of Nigeria player, was shot dead in a botched burglary in Texas before Thanksgiving.

Onyeuku, 29, was trying to break into a home in Plano on 21 November and was shot and killed by the homeowner, Police say. Onyeuku had played for the Nigerian team that qualified for this summer’s Olympic Games in London.

"CAN considers suing Boko Haram at International Criminal Court"- Oritsejafor


The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN,  said on Wednesday that it is putting plans in place to press charges against the Islamic insurgent group, Boko Haram, at the International Criminal Court.

The President of the Association, Ayo Oritsejafor, stated this at the opening of the National Executive Council Meeting of the association in Awka, Anambra State.
“We at CAN are strongly considering pressing charges against the Boko Haram sect for crimes committed against Christians at the International Criminal Court and we will commence soon,” Mr. Oritsejafor said.

Suspected Serial killer arrested in Lagos


The Lagos State Police Command says it has apprehended Ibrahim Balogun, a 25-year-old man accused of perpetrating  series of murders in Somolu, Bariga and Fadeyi in the state.

PUNCH Metro had reported on June 25, 2012, that Balogun also known as Small Jpron, was declared wanted following a gang-related violence between Shaggy Boys and Downtown Boys which left at least five people dead in Ilaje, Bariga.

Four killed as JTF Arrests 31 Boko Haram suspects in Maiduguri


The Joint Task Force in Maiduguri the Borno state capital says three members of the Boko Haram insurgents and one soldier were killed in a gun battle between the insurgents and security forces in Maiduguri.

In a statement today in Maiduguri, the spokesman of the JTF, Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa, said the Task Force, acting on information carried out a cordon and search operation at Bulabulin Ganram area of Maiduguri Metropolis and witnessed a severe resistance from the insurgents.

The gun battle which was carried out around 12:30PM led to the death of three of the insurgents and one soldier as one other soldier was injured.

The statement also revealed that one member of the JTF who is an immigration personnel was missing in the process.

The statement adds that 31 members of Boko Haram were arrested, while one AK 47 Rifle, one G 3 rifle as well as some quantity of assorted magazines and ammunition were recovered from the scene.

Efforts, according to the statement, are being made to find out the where about of the missing  JTF personnel.

  

Sack Sanusi now, NLC tells Federal Government

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the federal government to sack the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, saying he was never qualified for the office in the first instance, and has shown more than enough incompetence and contempt for the Nigerian people.

Through its President, Abdulwahed Omar, the NLC was responding to a statement by Mr. Sanusi in which he recommended that the government sack 50% of its workforce in order to revive the economy.
“It has become obvious that there are some individuals parading the corridors of power who are not qualified to be anywhere around organizations saddled with the responsibility of developing policies for national development,” NLC said.  “Since assumption of office as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, all Sanusi’s major pronouncements have been either directly anti people or ruinous to the Nigerian economy.”

Mexican beauty queen killed in shootout



A 20-year-old state beauty queen died in a gun battle between soldiers and the alleged gang of drug traffickers she was traveling with.

The body of Maria Susana Flores Gamez was found Saturday lying near an assault rifle on a rural road in a mountainous area of the drug-plagued state of Sinaloa in mexico, the chief state prosecutor said Monday. It was unclear if she had used the weapon.

"She was with the gang of criminals, but we cannot say whether she participated in the shootout," state prosecutor Marco Antonio Higuera said. "That's what we're going to have to investigate."

The slender, 5-foot-7-inch brunette was voted the 2012 Woman of Sinaloa in a beauty pageant in February. In June, the model competed with other seven contestants for the more prestigious state beauty contest known as "Our beauty", but didn't win. The Our Beauty state winners compete for the Miss Mexico title, whose holder represents the country in the international Miss Universe.

Higuera said Flores Gamez was traveling in one of the vehicles that engaged soldiers in an hours-long chase and running gun battle on Saturday near her native city of Guamuchil in the state of Sinaloa, home to Mexico's most powerful drug cartel. Higuera said two other members of the drug gang were killed and four were detained.

Cows killed for Zuma's re-election


South Africa's President Jacob Zuma has appealed to his ancestors to help him hold on to the leadership of the ruling African National Congress (ANC).

Mr Zuma attended a ceremony at his village on Sunday, where 12 cattle were slaughtered and incense burnt as people prayed for his re-election.

His opponents are pushing for him to be ousted as ANC leader at the party's conference next month.

Mr Zuma, a polygamist with 21 children, is a well-known Zulu traditionalist.

He beat his predecessor Thabo Mbeki in a bitterly contested election in 2007 for the leadership of the ANC.

Suspected Boko Haram Gunmen attack Police base in Abuja

Gunmen, early Monday, attacked the headquarters of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, in Abuja leading to a shoot-out for many hours.

The men are believed to be members of the Boko Haram who attempted to free their members being held by the police.

Premium Times reports that the attack was repelled by the police, it further said that no casualty has been reported

This daring attack is coming less than 24 hours after suspected Boko Haram members detonated explosives at a church in a major military training compound in Jaji, Kaduna State.

A man, who claimed to be a senior member of the sect told PREMIUM TIMES, Monday, that “we (the group) have put our house in order and Nigerians have not seen anything yet.”

Police Force spokesperson, Frank Mba, could not be reached for comment.

Security operatives have already cordoned the Apo area of Abuja where the attack occurred. A manhunt is already being carried out to locate the attackers who may still be in the area according to security sources.

The security forces last week declared the leaders of the sect wanted, placing a bounty on them.

5 trillion naira Stolen under Jonathan's administration- Punch Investigation



Over N5tn in government funds have been stolen through fraud, embezzlement and theft since President Goodluck Jonathan assumed office on May 6, 2010, a SUNDAY PUNCH investigation has found.

Punch correspondents arrived at the stolen sum after going through the reports of the various committees set up by the President to probe some sectors of the economy, particularly oil and gas. The paper also relied on disclosures by some senior government officials.

Five trillion naira is the summation of government funds said to have been stolen, according to the Mallam Nuhu Ribadu-led Petroleum Task Force report; the Minister of Trade and Investment’s report on stolen crude; the House of Representatives fuel subsidy report and investigations into the ecological fund, SIM card registration and frequency band spectrum sale.

UPDATE: 11 Persons dead, 30 injured in Kaduna Church blast



At least ten worshipers were killed this afternoon as two car bombs exploded at  the Military Protestant church inside the Armed Forces Command and Staff College in Jaji, near Kaduna. An unspecified number of worshippers were injured.

The director of army public relations, Brigadier General Bola  Koleosho, confirmed the attacks to SaharaReporters. He also disclosed that the deadly explosions happened around 12: 30 p.m. Nigerian time.

NCPC allays fears on safety of Nigerian Pilgrims in Israel


Executive Secretary of Nigeria Christian Pilgrims Commission, John Kennedy Opara has assured Nigerians of the safety of their fellow country men and women who are on pilgrimage in Israel.

This follows the escalation of violence between the state of Israel and Hamas militants in Gaza which has seen rockets fired into Israel and Gaza as well resulting in casualties in both sides.

He gave the assurance at a Press Conference in the Commission's Headquarters in Nigeria's capital Abuja, adding that Nigerian security agencies were working with their counterparts in Israel to ensure the safety of Nigerian Pilgrims.

Over 5,000 pilgrims have so far been airlifted to Israel and about 4,000 have returned safely to Nigeria.



Religious Violence in Kano: over 4 dead, Church, shops burnt


No fewer than four persons were killed in religious violence in Bichi Local Government Area of Kano State on Thursday.

Also, 15 shops were reportedly razed, a church burnt and several people were said to have been wounded.

This was revealed by eyewitnesses who told reporters in Kano, that the violence erupted as a result of a communication breakdown between a non-Muslim tailor and a Muslim man over an inscription on a dress designed by the tailor.

According to some of the residents, the tailor had allegedly omitted two letters in the inscription, which altered the meaning and believed to be insulting to Muslims.

State Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Idris, maintained that there were no casualties and that the situation had been brought under control.

Chelsea name Benitez interim coach

Chelsea have appointed former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez as interim manager until the end of the season.

Previous manager Roberto Di Matteo was sacked on Wednesday following the 3-0 Champions League defeat by Juventus.

The BBC reports that Benitez's short-term appointment could pave the way for owner Roman Abramovich to make a summer approach for ex-Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola.

Benitez, 52, becomes the Blues' ninth manager since Abramovich took over in 2003.

Winner of MTN's Aeroplane Promo inundated with marriage proposals

Winner of the much hyped MTN Aeroplane promo, Gladys Ebube Essien-Garricks has revealed that she has been inundated with marriage proposals from men after winning the 64 million naira prize money offered by MTN in place of the plane.

In an interview with the Punch newspaper, the 27 year old undergraduate said:  “People are calling to ask my parents if I am married, some others are giving them promises. Even on the Internet, I don’t have a Facebook account but someone has opened one in my name. If anyone is coming because of my money, I promise the person that he will not get a dime because I will make sure he doesn’t.” 

Could this gold digging attitude by some Nigerian men be as a result of increasing laziness or get rich quick syndrome among the youths? is it possible that a 27 year old undergraduate does not have a facebook account in this age of social media craze?.

Dangote still the richest man in Africa

House of Reps Ethics Committee Clears Farouk Lawan of bribery allegation


Nigeria's House of Representatives has absolved one of its own, Honourable Farouk Lawan (Kano State) of any wrongdoing in a bribery allegation levelled against him by oil magnate Femi Otedola.

The House had began a probe into the allegations against Farouk who chaired the Adhoc committee that reviewed transactions between the Federal government and oil marketers following Government's failed bid to remove petroleum subsidy.

Farouk was accused by Otedola of receiving 600,000 dollars from him to ensure that the name of his company was removed from the list of oil marketers indicted by the Farouk led Committee. 

A sting operation carried out by the SSS was reported to have caught Farouk on camera receiving the said money from Otedola in his home in the country's capital, Abuja.



"Nigerian Coaches collect bribe from players to select them for National teams"- Westerhorf


Former Nigeria national team coach, Clemens Westerhof has revealed that players bribed their way into the national team in the past.

Westerhof, who coached Nigeria to success at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia and also led the Super Eagles to their first-ever Fifa World Cup in the United States in 1994, said the players who did not merit a place in the national team got call-ups after giving money to the selectors.

Chelsea "fires" manager Roberto Di Matheo


"Manager Roberto Di Matteo has parted company with Chelsea, the club has announced this is what the BBC is reporting but its obvious he has been sacked by the Russian owner, Roman Abrahamovic.

Di Matteo won the Champions League and FA Cup as caretaker manager last season and was given a two-year deal in June.

But in the wake of the 3-0 defeat to Juventus , which has left the Blues on the brink of a Champions League exit, he has left Stamford Bridge.

University of ilorin to offer course in Chinese language





The University of Ilorin on Tuesday said it would commence teaching of Chinese (Mandarin) language.

The University, which resolved the issue at its 23rd meeting of the Senate held in Ilorin, said that preparation for the take off of the course was in the pipe line.

The University's Director, Corporate Affairs Department, Mr Idris Akogun, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the introduction of Mandarin was to prepare students for a fast changing global and political economy.

He said that the university would teach Mandarin as one of the foreign languages learnt in the institution.

How Officials of National Sports Commission cheated Paralympians


When Folashade Oluwafemiayo was chosen as one of the 38 Paralympians to represent Nigeria at the London 2012 Paralympics, she was overjoyed.

Folashade, a power lifter, was well prepared for the global tournament and felt she could earn Nigeria a medal.

To ensure that Folashade and her colleagues performed very well at the games, particularly after Nigeria’s failure at the Olympics, the National Sports Commission decided to take adequate care of the athletes.

The power lifter and her colleagues were told that they would be paid $100 (N15 thousand) per day for  the 19 days they would be in London. They were actually paid that.

What Folashade and her colleagues did not know was that while they as athletes were paid a $100 per day, the least official of the ministry, including guests, got about 400 per cent what she got; with one getting about 900 per cent more.

Younger Brother Of President Jonathan Dies At Aso Rock Clinic


President Goodluck Jonathan's younger brother Meni Jonathan is reported to have died at the Aso Rock clinic Abuja today.

Online news medium, Sahara reporters claims that Medical sources informed it that Mr. Meni was flown in from Bayelsa last week to receive medical treatment at the Villa. 

It however did not state the cause of death .

Mr. Meni is President Jonathan's half brother and had acted as the head of Otueke council chiefs before his untimely death in Abuja today.
 

He was described by a family source as someone in his 40s.

UNIABUJA Shut Down Indefinitely following student's unrest

The University of Abuja has been shut down indefinitely following student’s protest on campus.

The protest followed the inability of the school authorities to meet up with the time limit for the accreditation of 5 faculties in the institution earlier suspended by the National Universities Commission.

A statement signed by the University’s registrar, Bello Modibbo said the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof James Adelabu in conjunction with the school’s senate approved the closure due to the threat to life and peace in the institution.

He therefore ordered students to vacate the campus immediately.
