Police Arrest Killers of Kano Lawmakers

Nigerian police based in Kano State claimed it has cracked the murder last month of two members of the State House of Assembly and arrested the masterminds.

PM News reports that the suspected killers were among criminals paraded at the Bompai Police headquarters, Kano on Wednesday, 2 January.

According to the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ibrahim K. Idris, Ibrahim Lawal, 22, of Layin YarbawaU/Uku quarters confessed to have participated in killing of the late legislators in December last year.

Lawal also named one Alhaji Saleh Kura, 54, a former chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Taurani Local Government Area as their sponsor.

“During interrogation, he (Ibrahim) confessed to have physically participated in the attack on the late honourable legislators. He further confessed to have joined the gang of hired killers in January 2012 with their gang leader and armourer, one Abdullahi alias Mabo oof Filin Kashew, U/Uku quarters who is at large,” Idris told newsmen.

He named other members of the gang on the wanted list of the police to include Sagir Yahuza, Suraju Adamu, Tasiu Shuaibu, Ashiru Mohammed and Mohammed Abdulsallam.

The police boss added that Ibrahim said Alhaji Saleh Kura sponsored the killing of the lawmakers at the rate of N100, 000, “of which they were given only thirty thousand (30, 000), leaving the balance of N70, 000.

“The gang leader and five other accomplices are still at large. The principal suspect, Ibrahim Lawal further confessed to have held several meetings on how to assassinate the legislators with Saleh Kura at a car park in his residence.
“That Alhaji Kura was together with the late Abba Garko at the time of assassination and that they Saleh and Abba Garko prayed together at Yan Awaki before the latter was assassinated by the principal suspects and his group,” Idris stated. The Police Commissioner also stated that investigation revealed that the name and GSM contact of Alhaji Saleh Kura was found in Ibrahim Lawal’s phone, adding that, “we further discovered different call logs between the duo.

“This clearly corroborates a grand criminal conspiracy between them. Efforts are on top gear to arrest the fleeing suspects. We are appealing to members of the public to assist us with useful information on whereabouts of the fleeing suspects as they were all known and living within the U/Uku neighbourhood,” Idris noted.

However, during interrogation, Alhaji Saleh refused to own up to the crime, as he claimed that the principal suspect, Ibrahim was only known to him as a thug who once worked for him during his time as chairman of PDP in Tarauni council.
The Police insisted that investigations so far has revealed that Saleh who runs a boutique at Abubakar Rimi market in Sabon Gari has a case to answer.

Late last year, Abba Ibrahim Garko representing Garko constituency and Danladi Isah Kademi representing Gaya constituency all at the state Assembly were murdered at different times by gun men on motorbikes.

Also, Mohammed Hassan, Abati Hassan and Babandi Mohammed all from Borno state, residing at Naibawa Quarters are now cooling their heels at the police net for criminal conspiracy, terrorism and intimidation. The three young men were arrested by the police for sending threatening text messages to their victims within and outside Kano, posing as members of a terrorists group.

“During investigation, the suspects confessed to have belonged to a terrorist group whose modus operandi was to make a GSM call to their victims, present themselves as members of terrorist group and demand huge amount of money or threaten to kill them. They also send threat messages to wealthy individuals, politicians and politicians in Kano and Borno states.

During a search at their residence at Naibawa Gabas, it was discovered that that they were living in posh apartment and conducts expensive lifestyle. They are cooperating with the police on investigation and will be charged to Court soon,” CP Idris said.

He also hinted that one Bala Dan Kande, a dismissed police corporal was arrested while in possession of Police accoutrements which include, four sets of yards of materials for police uniform, two pieces of police beret, four pieces of police belt, seven pieces of jack knife, 505 pieces of police buttons. Other items found with the dismissed police corporal include 34 pieces of police crest, four pieces of officers crest, NPF tag, XA tear gas, two pieces of measuring tape and two pieces of scissors.

“The suspect was a serving member of Kano Command and was arrested for similar offence some time ago. Having undergone disciplinary punishment which led to his dismissal from the Force, he was subsequently prosecuted and jailed in the prison. Yet, after serving his prison term, he was parading himself as a serving police man to unsuspecting victims and suspected to have been conniving with criminals to perpetuate evil acts.
