NUC Dissociates Self From List of top 50 and 100 Universities in Nigeria

Nedu Echianu's blog had sometime ago released a "top 50" Universities in Nigeria report which was believed to have been an assessment of Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria by the University regulatory body NUC.
The following statement as released by the body has however disassociated itself from the list.
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has dissociated itself from the lists, making the rounds of the ‘Top 100’ and ‘Top 50’ universities in Nigeria, which were alleged to be the outcome of a non-existing annual university ranking by the NUC.
The commission in a statement also noted that the lists did not emanate from it and therefore totally dissociates itself from them.

According to the statement, the first ranking of Nigerian universities by the NUC, was in 2002 and based on the performance of the universities’ academic programmes in the 1999 and 2000 accreditation exercises.

2004 ranking was based on data of percentage of academic programmes, compliance with carrying capacity, proportion of the academic staff of the university at professorial level.
It said the results of the above were duly published by the Commission and the same will be done for future exercises.

While advising stakeholders in the university education sub-sector and the general public to ignore the spurious lists of ‘Top 100’ and ‘Top 50’ universities being peddled around, the commission said its next ranking exercise will be made public when it eventually emerges with one.
