The Directorate of Road traffic services popularly called Vehicle Inspection Office VIO has insisted that the issuance of drivers’ licence and vehicle plate number is the responsibility of the agency and not the Federal Road Safety Commission FRSC.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Nedu Echianu's Blog, the public Relations officer of the Directorate at its Headquarters in Abuja, Kay Kay Iloduba urged motorists to disregard any purported text message urging them to obtain their plate numbers and drivers licence only from the Federal Road safety Commission.
According to him, the major role of FRSC among other things is to ensure safety on Nigerian roads; "FRSC are partners in the process, their major role is to take the data of all vehicles in the country and to ensure quick response to accident victims, there is no law in Nigeria that mandates them to issue vehicle plate numbers and drivers license" he added
In his response, the corps education officer of FRSC, Jonas Agwu declined to comment on the purported text message being circulated to motorists, insisting that it is a mere rumour as the commission had atno time sent out such messages and there are no evidence of the existence of the said text messages.
The VIO vs. FRSC issue is not yet over as both said are holding their ground on the matter, Nedu Echianu's blog will bring you developments on the matter as they unfold.
