The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says it has successfully restored electricity supply to Asokoro, Garki, Apo, and Karu areas of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as well as Nassarawa State, following the completion of repair works in the Apo Transmission substation, which was affected by a fire incident caused by direct lightning strike on Tuesday, 16th September, 2014.
TCN Management, in a statement signed by the GM (Public Affairs), Seun Olagunju, said that the Apo Substation fire incident caused the loss of a 60MVA 133/33kV power transformer, associated 33kV switch gears, cables and other accessories, worth several millions of naira. After the fire was put off, TCN engineers quickly assessed the extent of damage to the 60MVA 330/132kV power transformer and cable network in the substation, isolated the burnt power transformer and commenced overhaul /repair works on affected equipment and replaced cable network and panels in the station’s control room.
According to the statement, due to the enormity of damage caused by the fire, TCN engineering team carried out the overhaul/repair works in phases. One of the 45MVA power transformers was restored on the 19th of September, while the second one was restored on the 20th of September 2014. This enabled the company recommence the transmission of electricity to distribution load centers which supply power to the Villa, Asokoro, Garki and parts of Apo in the FCT.
The company noted that due to the relentless efforts of the engineers, the 132kV Karu transmission line was also restored on the 21st of September, 2014, enabling the Abuja Distribution company restore power supply to Karu and Nassarawa state. With the completion of repair works on the 1X100MVA power transformer power which was energized on Sunday, 28th September, 2014, supply is being restored to the remaining part of Apo, Durumi, Sunny Ville and environs.
TCN said it appreciates the patience and understanding of its electricity customers in the FCT and Nassarawa State who were affected by the Apo substation fire incident and apologizes for any inconvenience the incident may have caused them.
