Nigeria's Parliament Shutdown as Police Invade Complex

Some MPs jumping over the gates of Nigeria's Parliament Building

Nigeria's Parliament was earlier today a beehive of chaotic activities as the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal was prevented by armed police and masked operatives of the Department of State Services popularly known as SSS from entering to the green champers of the House to preside over plenary.

The Speaker had defected from the ruling People's Democratic Party to the opposition All Progressives Congress APC, leading to calls for his resignation by the leadership of the PDP.

The Speaker's entrance into the Assembly complex was first resisted by security operatives and later greeted shots of tear gas canisters when he succeeded in company of his colleagues to gain entrance into the complex.

The Chairman of the National Assembly, Senate President, David Mark has closed down the parliament until Tuesday the 25th of November to allow for proper investigation on the matter, describing the Police invasion of the parliament building as unfortunate.
