Civil Society Coalition Hail Namadi Sambo's Performance in Election Debate


Nigeria's Vice President, Architect Namadi Sambo has been rated very high in the Election debate for Vice Presidential candidates organized by the Nigeria Election Debate Group on the 1st of February 2015.

A coalition of civil society organisations under the aegis of Voters Initiative led by Dr. Gabriel Nwambu, in a press conference in Abuja said the Vice Presidential Candidate of the PDP and the incumbent Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Arc. Namadi Sambo was well articulated while coherently highlighting the achievements of the Present administration. 

According to what they described as an independent assessment of all the candidates on the said debate, the Vice President engaged the audience in a constructive dialogue on the Nigerian Economy, dwindling oil price, Power (Electricity) etc.
Consequently, bringing all the parameters for analysis together, His Excellency, Arc. Namadi Sambo performed creditable well in the election debate.

A PRESS CONFERENCE ADDRESSED BY A COALITION OF CIVIL SOCIETY ORGANIZATIONS(VOTERS INITIATIVE) WHO OBSERVED THE 2015 VICE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATE OF 1ST FEBRUARY,2015 AT THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE CENTRE (ICC), ABUJA.

In the world over, elections debate has become widely accepted as a process of enhancing greater credibility of an electoral system. Consequently, election debate provides Candidates of various political parties same platform to debate on their policy strategies and programmes to enable the electorates make informed choices in exercising their franchise. Thus, candidates of various political parties may all be fairly well known to the Nigerian Electorates as they utilize the platform to educate the electorates on what their manifesto is all about, hence making debates a critical component of the democratic process and strengthening democracy in Nigeria.

However, 14 Vice Presidential candidates were expected in the debate, but 4 were absent including the APC.

These Candidates include

1.     Comrade Ishaka Paul Ofemile of the Action Alliance.

2.     Akuchie Clinton Cliff of the Alliance for Democracy.

3.     Ojengbede Oluremi Farida- Allied Congress Party of Nigeria.

4.     Obianuju Murphy-Uzohue- African Democratic Congress.

5.     Anthony faith Ologbosere- African Peoples Party.

6.     Prof. Yemi Osibanjo- All Progressive Congress.

7.     Hassana Hassan- Citizens Popular Party.

8.     Alh. Haruna Yahaya Shaba- Hope Democratic Party.

9.     Alh. Seidu Bobboi- KOWA Party.

10.                        Ibrahim Mohammed- National Conscience Party.

11.                        Arc. Mohammed Namadi Sambo- Peoples Democratic Party.

12.                        Arabamhen Mary- Peoples Party of Nigeria.

13.                        Haruna Adamu- United Democratic Party.

14.                        Barr. Bello Umar- United Progressive Party.

During the debate, the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations categorized the scoring of these candidates based on-

a.     Constructive Discussion.

b.     Composure.

c.      Dressing.

d.     Issue Based Argument.

e.     Vocabulary.

f.       Spoken English.

g.     Adherence to time.

OUR INDEPENDENT OBSERVATIONS.

Having observed very critically the process of debate of the Vice Presidential Candidates of the 14 participating political parties, the Nigerian Voters Initiative hereby state as follows-

1.     That the 2015 Vice Presidential debate actually held on the 1st of Feb; 2015 at the International Conference Centre (ICC) Abuja.

2.     That the entire process of debate was transparent, unbiased, free, fair and credible.

3.     That as a coalition we as civil society Organizations hereby pass a vote of confidence on the Nigeria Election Debate Group (NEDG) for conducting a credible debate.

4.     That out of the 14 Political parties,5 used women as their Vice Presidential Candidates. This is very significant as the active participation of women in politics is on the increase.

5.     The Vice Presidential Candidates of the Allied Congress Party of Nigeria, Ojengbede Oluremi performed brilliantly, while Obianuju Murphy- Uzohue of the African democratic Congress also exhibited courage and apt control of English Language.

6.     The Vice Presidential Candidate of the PDP and the incumbent Vice President, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Arc. Namadi Sambo was well articulated while coherently highlighting the achievements of the Present administration. He engaged the audience in a constructive dialogue on the Nigerian Economy, dwindling oil price, Power (Electricity) etc.

Consequently, bringing all the parameters for analysis together, His Excellency, Arc. Namadi Sambo performed creditable well in the election debate.

CONCLUSION
The Coalition of Civil Society Organizations who Observed and graded the 2015 Vice Presidential debate hereby affirm that Arc. Namadi Sambo performed better than any other candidate, thus it is our firm believe that the economy of Nigeria is in good hands and it is only normal for us as Nigerians to do the right thing by allowing continuity.

By this medium, we reiterate our commitment to a sustainable democratic principles in Nigeria via a transparent, free, fair and credible elections.
