StarTimes: Nigerians to watch Mikel live from China

The numerous fans of Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi, will now have the opportunity of watching the player as digital television service provider, StarTimes, has concluded plans to beam live the Chinese Super League.

Mikel joined Tianjin TEDA from Chelsea in the January transfer window to team up with former Chelsea mate, Oscar and other top stars like Carlos Tevez, Obafemi Martins, Gervinho, and Demba Ba.

Apart from players, top coaches like Manuel Pellegrini will be on the touchline for Hebei China Fortune, as he challenges Felipe Scolari, who has won the title in the last two seasons with Guangzhou Evergrande, to the title.

Also in the mix are Andre Villas-Boas of Shanghai SIPG and Fabio Cannavaro of Tianjin Quanjian.

StarTimes has assured fans at the weekend of the opportunity to see most of these stars from the comfort of their homes.

“It is good we’re starting early with Chinese Super League speaking from StarTimes Perspective because the projection is that in the next couple of years, the Chinese League will become so big like the English Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga and what have view,” Qasim Elegbede, content marketing manager, of StarTimes, said.

“So it’s preferable StarTimes joins in now before it becomes a tug of war and right now StarTimes has a very long standing relationship with them and we’re happy to be the only platform in Sub-Saharan Africa showing the Chinese League exclusively to Africans. And the key because Mikel Obi today is Nigeria captain and playing in the Chinese League and how do you as a Nigerian monitor his performance and progress, to know whether he actually merit being called back into the Super Eagles and believe me Chinese League is where you have diaspora, players from Europe, South and North America and Africa.”

Unlike in many top European leagues, the Chinese Super League starts in February or March and ends in November or December. In each season, each club plays each of the other clubs twice, once at home and another away. The current system, with 16 clubs in the Super League, so the teams played 30 games each for a total of 240 games in the season.

The two lowest placed teams by the end of the season are relegated to the China League One and the top two teams from the League One are promoted, taking their places.

The top three of the league, as well as the winner of the Chinese FA Cup, qualify for the AFC Champions League of the next year. If the FA Cup finalists finish the league 3rd or higher, 4th place in the league will take the Champions League spot.
