Senate Asks INEC To Declare 1993 Presidential Election Result

The Senate has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC to release the final results of the June 12 1993 presidential election which was widely proclaimed as free and fair and believed to have been won by Moshood Abiola.

The move followed President Muhammadu Buhari's declaration of June 12 as the authentic democracy day in the country and the post humous investiture of Abiola with the highest national honour of GCFR, which is reserved for Presidents.

Senate's demand was part of the resolutions reached today in plenary following a debate on a motion by Senator representing Ekiti South, Biodun Olujimi.

In her presentation, Senator Olujimi hoped that President Muhammadu Buhari’s declaration of June 12 as democracy day as against May 29 was done in good fate and not a political move to get votes from the South West.

In his contribution, Senator Lanre Tejuosho, urged the executive and the legislature to use the opportunity to settle their differences.

The Senate also resolved that May 29 remains the inauguration of the President, insisting that all entitlements and allowances be paid to the families of late Abiola and his running mate Babagana Kingibe.

Meanwhile,  Senator representing Kogi West, Dino Melaye has faulted the post humous award given to Late Abiola by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Citing section 43 subsection 2 of the national honours Act, Melaye noted that though the award was in line with democratic principles, it contravenes the provisions of the Act on post humous awards.

in his remarks, Senate President, Bukola Saraki said the declaration is a recognition of the contributions and sacrifices made by late MKO Abiola, adding that the inconsistencies in the President's decision should not belittle the intention.
